TOEFL Syllabus for all Courses

WESLI English Online has created TOEFL lessons with one idea in mind...to help you pass the TOEFL test!  Our TOEFL courses are based on the actual TOEFL test.  We offer listening, structure and reading in all our TOEFL courses.
Listening The listening section measures your ability to comprehend North American spoken English.  It tests understanding of main ideas, supporting ideas, details and inferences.  There are two parts to the listening comprehension portion of the test.

Part A = Short conversations followed by one question after each.
Part B = Short dialogues, mini-lectures and academic discussions followed by questions.

Structure This is the grammar portion of the test.  It measures your ability to recognize appropriate written language.  The language on this part of the test is formal rather than conversational.  Special knowledge of the topics is not required in order to answer the questions in this section of the TOEFL test.  There are two types of questions.

Type 1 = Sentence completion.  You must choose the best word or phrase to complete the sentence.
Type 2 = Error identification.  There are 4 underlined words or phrases and you must determine which word or phrase is incorrect.

Reading This portion of the test measures your ability to understand short reading passages which are similar to what you might find in an academic text used in colleges and universities in North America.   You will read three passages and answer a number of questions after each.

General Information

TOEFL stands for Test Of English as a Foreign Language.  The TOEFL test is administered in many countries around the world to non-native English speaking students who want to enter a college or university in the United States.  A TOEFL score is required by more than 4000 2-year, and 4-year colleges and universities.  The score requirements vary by school, however, a good score can mean the difference between being accepted to a university and not being accepted.

The TOEFL test consists of 4 components; listening, structure, reading and writing.  There is a paper-based test and a computer-based test.  You can contact your test center to see which test they use.  For more information on the TOEFL test, you may want to visit the TOEFL site at http://www.toefl.org.
